Marine Conservation Programme
Operating from Atoll Marine Centre, we rescue turtles from the illegal pet trade and those who have been injured from ghost nets, rehabilitate, and reintroduce them back to the wild. As a volunteer, you will be an integral part of our team, working with our Marine Biologists on the day to day running of the Marine Centre and turtle husbandry activities, from cleaning and feeding, to assisting with administrating medical treatment. Volunteers also have the opportunity to gain experience in coral gardening, data collection and community outreach.
Community Development Programme
We offer volunteers the unique opportunity to work with local community members to develop projects and ideas to improve the quality of life for our community. Whether it’s constructing a new playground, or organizing waste awareness campaigns, our volunteers will be a central pillar in the community, interacting with local people, and utilizing your unique skills and expertise to improve our community in a variety of different ways.
We offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to teach children off all ages, and experience the Maldivian education system. You will work with both local and international staff and be right at the center throughout the process of planning and teaching classes, across a variety of subjects. Through working at our schools you will immerse yourself into our community, working with other organizations and volunteers to organize community events, with the children as your focus. By volunteering with our children, you will be making a real difference to their future.
Medical Placements Programme
This is a unique opportunity for medical students or experienced professionals to work alongside trained medical staff at the busiest hospital in the Lhaviyani Atoll. Through shadowing hospital staff across a range of departments, volunteers gain vital international experience working at the Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital on Naifaru treating patients from all over the atoll, experiencing the challenges and rewards of working in medicine in a developing country.
Sport has always been a great connector between communities. In the Maldives, volleyball, football and our local sport, bashi, are the most popular sports. Regular tournaments and competitions are organised to give the youth opportunity to be more active. You could get the chance to teach children sports in a variety of disciplines and play an important part in enriching the lives of a new generation.
We offer several long-term volunteering positions here at Atoll Volunteers for individuals to gain invaluable skills and practical experience. We need dedicated, open-minded and disciplined individuals who can organise, manage and generally run our activities – and at the same time keep a healthy balance between work and fun!
As we are a non-profit organisation, the positions are unpaid, but with food and accommodation provided – no fees are to be paid by you! So, if you are looking for the opportunity to develop your skills, experience life in the real Maldives, and make a real difference to our community, check out the opportunities we have available.
